The holidays are a time for joy and celebration with family and friends. Unfortunately, this is also when cybercriminals are looking for vulnerabilities while you travel or visit family over the holidays. Before you pack your bags, here are some cyber security tips so you can avoid becoming the next target.
Use a VPN when accessing company information
Even if you have a last-minute business email to send or project to work on, take a few extra moments to protect your data with a VPN.
A VPN is a Virtual Private Network that creates an encrypted tunnel for your data, which protects your connection and privacy online even if someone tries to intercept it. All employees that access the internet, applications, or company network need a VPN.
Beware of public Wi-Fi
Think twice before using public Wi-Fi networks. These are convenient, but they come with security risks because cybercriminals use them to intercept your data, infect your device, and steal data from your device (all without leaving a trace). If you haven’t already done so, disable the option to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks from your device.
When you’re traveling, stay connected to trusted Wi-Fi networks that you know are safe. Once you connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network, you should connect to your organization’s VPN to keep your sensitive information safe from prying eyes.

Secure your device and have a backup plan
Lock your devices when you’re not using them. This helps protect your information from unauthorized access in case it gets lost or stolen. Make sure to backup your important data before traveling so you can retrieve it if necessary.
Lock down your accounts
Make certain you have strong passwords for all of your accounts and that your devices are secured with a password, PIN, or biometric identifier. Next, add an extra layer of security for all of your accounts with two-factor authentication (2FA).
What is two-factor authentication?
This is a security measure that requires two different means of identification to gain access. These can include something you know, like a password or PIN code, and something you have, like your phone. Then, even if your password is compromised, it will be much more difficult to access your account.
How do I set up two-factor authentication?
Setting up two-factor authentication is easy. Just log into the account you want to enable it for, and look for the option on the security settings page.
Keep your devices updated
If you want to protect your device from hackers, make sure you install the latest security patches for your operating system, antivirus software, and browsers as soon as they are released. You can even enable automatic updates so you don’t have to remember to manually update each time a new patch is released. That way, your device will be as secure as possible and better equipped to defend against cybercriminals looking for vulnerabilities.
Remember, cybercriminals love holidays just as much as you do – and they never go on vacation. With the above tips, you should be well on your way to protecting your company and yourself from cybercrime this holiday season.
